A few years ago, I visited my physiotherapist for a persistent neck spasm. After just a few questions, she suggested I might be dealing with a condition called TMJ. It was a revelation—I’d been suffering from headaches and migraines since I was a young girl, and alongside that, I’d battled neck spasms, IBS, anxiety, and more. At that point, I was relying on 6 to 8 strong painkillers a day just to get through the headaches.

She referred me to Dr. Annelize in Parys for a consultation. After my first visit, the diagnosis was confirmed: I had TMJ. Dr. Annelize proposed a personalized treatment plan to address it, though she warned it would take several months to see results.

One part of the plan involved wearing dental straighteners—which, at over 50, I thought would look absolutely ridiculous. Another step was getting an implant, something I was genuinely terrified of. But I have to admit, despite the discomfort and my initial hesitation, the journey was completely worth it.

The entire process took nearly two years. Surprisingly, the straighteners weren’t as bad as I’d feared. Only one person made a silly comment, asking why I’d want straight teeth at my age. That moment turned into an opportunity to educate them about TMJ and how it affects the body.

The implant, too, wasn’t nearly as daunting as I’d imagined. While my symptoms haven’t disappeared entirely, I can confidently say they’ve significantly improved. My headaches are much less frequent, and I rarely need painkillers anymore—sometimes none at all.
